Everest Akens, a student from Carpinteria Middle School, embraced the opportunity to grow as a violinist, connect with peers, and perform as part of an ensemble. We caught up with Everest to hear about her favorite moments from camp, what she learned, and how the experience is shaping her musical journey. Here’s what she had to say:

What was your favorite part of music camp this year?
My favorite part of string camp was being able to connect with friends, challenge myself, and seek help from peers.

What new things did you learn about at camp?
Some new things I learned from string camp were singing solfege, learning how to play in a quartet, and improving my technique.

What’s one song or piece you’re proud you learned to play?
I am proud that I learned to play “Invicta” by Soon Hee Newbold as a solo violin piece.

Did you make any new friends at camp? What was it like playing alongside them at the camp concert?
I did get to meet new people and make new friends at string camp. It was a great experience to play alongside people you are friends with because you can give your friends positive feedback and ways to improve. Also, it feels more like playing the piece is teamwork.

What would you tell another student who is thinking about joining camp?
I would tell another student thinking of joining String Camp that it is a great experience. Although the first day might be challenging, you get to learn so much and have a lot of fun.

How do you think music camp will help you in school or in the future?
I think music camp will help me in my future by showing me guest artists and giving me an idea of what to strive for.

If you could say something to the people who helped make music camp possible, what would you say?
I would tell them that I am very thankful for the great experience they have made possible.
