Readers are Leaders

Readers Are Leaders is a new early literacy initiative designed to help TK through 3rd grade students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District build strong reading foundations during the years that matter most.

By combining the power of trained community volunteers with the expertise of educators, the program ensures young readers receive the time, encouragement, and support they need to thrive.

Readers Are Leaders is a collaborative partnership between Partners in Education, the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Unified School District, with each organization playing a distinct and essential role in strengthening early literacy across our community.

Why it Matters

Learning to read by third grade is a critical milestone that shapes a child’s entire academic journey.

When students build strong reading skills early, they are more likely to succeed in school and pursue future opportunities with confidence.

Readers Are Leaders brings trained community volunteers into classrooms to provide additional consistency and support during the school day, helping close learning gaps, build confidence, and strengthen the foundation for a lifelong love of reading

How the Program Works

During the pilot year, volunteers are trained and placed in TK–3rd grade classrooms at selected elementary schools. Volunteers support students through small group reading activities during the school’s daily literacy block, known as “Power Hour.” At the same time, teachers focus on students with the most intensive needs.
